30 years ago this year, a hot new R&B group called New Edition hit the scene. The group’s dynamics were a recipe for instant success. Their debut song “Candy Girl” will forever be ingrained in our minds. The song was so powerful it climbed to #1. Those dynamics eventually changed and a few members went on to have successful solo careers over the years and now, we get to enjoy New Edition once again as they’ve reunited for their 30th anniversary celebration tour. The group had successes as well as individuals within the group. Michael Bivins gave me the opportunity to speak with him regarding the group, balance and success in the following interview:
OM: New Edition is celebrating 30 years in the business this year. Let’s go back to when it all started for a moment. Who were a couple of your mentors in the music industry when you were a kid and please explain why?
MIKE: Our mentor was Ronnie’s Uncle, Brook Payne. He put it all together and named us New Edition, did our choreography, managed us, took us under his wings and taught everybody, basically, everything they know.
